The ABCs of Trusting God
Remembering the God Who Holds Us
Trust grows as we come to know the God in whom we place it. He is holy, sovereign, wise, good, and faithful—even when our circumstances leave us trembling.
These ABCs invite us to remember who God has revealed Himself to be and bring the weight of our lives to Him. We cannot manufacture restful hearts by determination alone. We depend upon His grace and the work of His Spirit.
Take one letter at a time. Read it slowly. Bring your questions, and ask God to make the truth of His character increasingly weighty in your heart.
- A — Almighty. No circumstance exceeds His power.
- B — Bountiful. His generosity flows from the fullness of His goodness.
- C — Compassionate. Our distress meets His tender care.
- D — Dependable. His promises rest upon His unchanging character.
- E — Eternal. Our brief view of the present never limits His sight.
- F — Faithful. His steadfastness does not rise and fall with ours.
- G — Good. His goodness remains true when His providence is hard to understand.
- H — Holy. No evil corrupts His character or stains His purposes.
- I — Incomprehensible. We can know Him truly without understanding Him exhaustively.
- J — Just. No wrong escapes His knowledge, and His judgments are righteous.
- K — King. No earthly power can overthrow His reign.
- L — Loving. In Christ, He has made His love unmistakably known.
- M — Merciful. We may bring Him our failures and seek His forgiveness.
- N — Near. We may pour out our hearts to Him, even when His presence feels distant.
- O — Omniscient. He knows every fact, every need, and everything we cannot see.
- P — Patient. He bears with us as we learn to walk by faith.
- Q — Our Quiet Rest. We may bring Him the burdens we cannot carry alone.
- R — Our Refuge. Trouble gives us reason to run to Him.
- S — Sovereign. Nothing falls outside His rule, though much remains beyond our understanding.
- T — Truthful. He cannot lie; His Word is worthy of our confidence.
- U — Unchanging. The God who holds us today will remain faithful tomorrow.
- V — Victorious. In the risen Christ, sin and death will never have the final word.
- W — Wise. His understanding is perfect, and His purposes are never foolish.
- X — eXalted. He reigns above every power that would claim our ultimate allegiance.
- Y — Yahweh. The Lord who reveals His name is faithful to His covenant promises.
- Z — Zealous for His Glory. He will accomplish His holy purposes and uphold the honor of His name.
Father, You know how readily our hearts reach for control when we cannot see the way ahead.
By Your Spirit, help us remember who You are. Give us grace to trust Your character when we cannot trace Your purposes, to obey while questions remain, and to rest the weight of our lives upon You.
Thank You that Your faithfulness holds steady when our faith trembles.
Amen.
